Saturday: Cypress at the Turn of the Century and Trains!

The month just flew by. It is hard to believe that Saturday's events are the last ones for Gulf Coast Reads 2015. There are only a few, but they reflect, I think, the diversity of programming that participating institutions have presented throughout the month.

At 1:00 p.m., you can get a look at Cypress, Texas before it became the hustling, bustling place it is today. The Cypress Historical Society will present Cypress at the Turn of the Century, an informative and entertaining look at a vanished world in your neck of the woods that hasn't entirely vanished at Harris County - Northwest Branch Library.

Thursday: Survival Skills and More

Brazoria County - Lake Jackson Library presents Family Fun Night: Hurricane and Survival Skills, today, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Along with a survival-themed activity for the whole family, the Houston Chronicle's former SciGuy blogger, Eric Berger will teach you about the science of storms. The library is located at 250 Circle Way in Lake Jackson.

Last Chance: MFAH Book & Art Tour.

This Thursday is your last chance to catch the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Book and Art Tour inspired by The Promise. You can enhance your experience of reading the novel with this docent-led tour of the Museum's galleries. Each stop on the tour includes discussion of excerpts from the novel and artworks in the galleries that connect with the characters, narrative, or a prominent theme in The Promise. Please bring along your copy of the book and your willingness to share thoughts about what you read as well as what you see in the galleries. MFAH's Beck Building. 5601 Main Street. Thursday, October 29. 10:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
